Château Auguste is an organic estate winery in Saint-Aubin-de-Branne in the Entre-Deux-Mers region on the right bank of the Bordeaux region. Its wines (see below) are sold under the generic Bordeaux AOC.

Owner: EARL Vignobles Meijer. Steven Meijer purchased Château Auguste in December 2005. He retained the services of the estate’s existing gérant (manager) Jean-Paul Serougne.

Vineyards: 32 hectares (79 acres) of vines in Saint-Aubin-de-Branne: 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernets. 4,000-4,500 vines/ha. Single guyot pruning with 6 buds.

Organic certification1970s The vines were farmed organically in the 1970s, Château Auguste’s then owner being a member of one of France’s pioneering organic farm associations, Qualité France. | 2001 Began organic conversion in 2001. | First vintage with full organic certification.

Winemaking: Machine picking. Wooden cage presses.

Rosé wines

Bordeaux Rosé AOC, Cuvée du Moulin: 2006 Merlot. Oenologist: M Guichard (back label). Deepish colour for Bordeaux Rosé. Dirty, sulphury, corky nose, and green tannins despite some impression of weight (tasted 22 July 2008).

Red wines

Bordeaux Rouge AOC, Cuvée du Moulin | 2006 Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv. Nice mid-ruby purple core with a light rim, but the fruit was light, vegetal, sulfury, flat, non-descript, lacking urgency and selection (tasted 22 Sept 2008).
