Ampelography is a term derived from the Greek ampelos (grape) and grapho (write), meaning it is the science of vine description based historically on observation and pictorial illustration of grapevines (Ian D’Agata, 2014, p.15-17). Ampelography is the first step in the more all-encompassing contemporary form of grapevine identification which is ampelology.
