Château Fougas is a Biodynamic estate winery in Lansac in the Côtes de Bourg AOC on the Bordeaux region’s right bank, France. The estate was purchased in 1976 by Roger Béchet, a négociant from Bordeaux. From 1982 his son Jean-Yves Béchet (b.1948) began running the estate, with his wife Michèle.

Vineyards: 1996 11ha. 50% Merlot, 25% each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. | 2010 17ha of Côtes de Bourg. 60% Merlot, 20% CF & 20% CS.

Terroir: 28 metres above sea level. Soil is colluvium (wind- and water-borne). Blue and red ferruginous clays, combined with sands and gravels, are deposited on a base of molasse du Fronsadais and limestone. Natural drainage is provided by two small streams to the east and west.Biodynamics: Jacques Mell consulted. 500, 501, MT. Compost sourced from Mell made using cow manure and marc. Wooden dynamiser (270 litres).

Certification: 2010 First vintage with full organic certification. | 2012 First vintage with full Biodynamic certification (Association Demeter France, SIVCBD).

Winemaking: Hand and machine picked (depends). Mainly stainless steel. Also cement. Pigeage. Some wines age in amphora with no added sulfites

Sales: Prospective clients can ‘buy’ lots of 100 vines for a season. Those that rent the vines take their part of the crop as a percentage when the wine is bottled.

Côtes de Bourg Rouge AOC, Château Fougas: 2011 30,000 bottles. Hand picked. Nice herb (Millésime Bio 2012).

Côtes de Bourg Rouge AOC, Maldoror: 1993 First vintage. | 2001 This cuvée represenented two-thirds of production. | 2011 Hand picked. 50% new oak. Nice soft style, very good (Millésime Bio 2012).
