Vegalfaro is an organic winery in the Utiel-Requena region of Spain.

Owner: Rodolfo Valiente García.

Background: The estate was originally mixed, dedicated to cereal crops, almonds, olives and vines. From 1980 the focus became more if not exclusively towards wine-growing.

Vineyards: 70 hectares (173 acres) in Utiel-Requena.

Certification: 2012 First vintage with full organic certification for 70 hectares (173 acres) of vines.

Sparkling wine

Cava NV: Chardonnay and Maccabeo. Somewhat chemical-tasting (Millésime Bio 2014).

White wines

Chardonnay Barrica: 2013 From Finca Casa Alfaro. 2 months in French oak. 25,000 bottles. Simple, crisp at Millésime Bio January 2014.

Sauvignon Blanc, Pasamonte: From Finca La Muela, which produces cereals, almonds, and olives as well as 4 hectares (9.9 acres) of vines, on chalky clay soil.

Pink wines

Vegalfaro Rosé: From young vine Merlot, plus Bobal from Finca Casa Alfaro. Chalky clay soil.

Red wines

Vegalfaro Cosecha: Vintage-dated, unoaked red from Bobal in the Finca Casa Alfaro. Blue label.

Vegalfaro Crianza: Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah from Finca Casa Alfaro which lies at 750 metres (2,460 feet). 9 months in French and Hungarian oak.

Vegalfaro Barrica: Merlot and Bobal on the Finca Casa Alfaro. 4 months in French and American oak.

Caprasia: Based on Bobal.

Rebel.ia: Tempranillo, Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tintorera) and Bobal vineyards on the Finca La Muela which lies at 750 metres (2,460 feet). | 2013 Each variety fermented differently. 4 months in French and American oak. Barrel sample showed smooth texture (Millésime Bio January 2014).

Merlot, Pago Los Balagueses: 100% Merlot. From Finca La Muela, on a plot originally known as “Pago de Balagueses”. 10 months in French oak.

Syrah, Pago Los Balagueses | From Finca La Muela, on a plot originally known as “Pago de Balagueses”. 10 months in French oak.
